Phenology of Cold Hardiness in Reproductive and Migrant Monarch Butterflies (Danaus plexippus) in Southwest Ohio

We examined seasonal changes in the cold hardiness of summer reproductive and fall migrant cohorts of the monarch butterfly in southwest Ohio in 1994. Reproductive and migrant butterfl ies were distinguished on the basis of l ipid content and whether the female had mated. We compared crystall ization temperatures (the temperature at which ice forms inside the body) and the capacity to resist ch...

Sperm precedence in monarch butterflies (Danaus plexippus)

We characterized sperm precedence in monarch butterflies (Danaus plexippus), using a series of experiments in which we manipulated male mating histories to vary spermatophore size and the number of sperm transferred. Several factors affected the outcome of sperm competition. There was a pattern of second-male sperm precedence, but second-male precedence was rarely complete, and several other fa...

Monarch butterflies (Danaus plexippus L.) use a magnetic compass for navigation.

Fall migratory monarch butterflies, tested for their directional responses to magnetic cues under three conditions, amagnetic, normal, and reversed magnetic fields, showed three distinct patterns. In the absence of a magnetic field, monarchs lacked directionality as a group. In the normal magnetic field, monarchs oriented to the southwest with a group pattern typical for migrants. When the hori...

Iteradensovirus from the Monarch Butterfly, Danaus plexippus plexippus

The 5,006-nucleotide (nt)-long genome of a new virus from monarch butterfly pupae was cloned and sequenced. It was flanked by inverted terminal repeats (ITRs) of 239 nt with 163-nt hairpins. The monosense genome with three open reading frames is typical of the genus Iteradensovirus in the subfamily Densovirinae of the family Parvoviridae.

Quasi-extinction risk and population targets for the Eastern, migratory population of monarch butterflies (Danaus plexippus)

The Eastern, migratory population of monarch butterflies (Danaus plexippus), an iconic North American insect, has declined by ~80% over the last decade. The monarch's multi-generational migration between overwintering grounds in central Mexico and the summer breeding grounds in the northern U.S. and southern Canada is celebrated in all three countries and creates shared management responsibilit...
